Vampires are defined by being exceedingly gorgeous, quick and graceful and very cold. Most vampires are reluctant to touch a human because of their icy skin. They prefer to stay out of the sun, not because it burns them like in some stories, but because in the sun, their skin glitters, as if it’s coated in crushed diamonds. They’re also very pale. Once a human becomes a vampire, their body ceases all growth. Their hair will remain the same length as well as fingernails, facial and other body hair. They will not gain or lose weight and physically will not age. Eyes change colors as well. Newborn vampires have bright red eyes that fade to a deep ruby color once they feed on human blood. All human drinkers keep red eyes. Vampires who drink animal blood have amber eyes when they’ve fed, dark black eyes when thirsty.
Vampires are exceedingly strong as well, able to move things ten times heavier than the normal human. (Esme and the family build their own houses, Edward throws trees…) They’re very fast as well and have quick reflexes. They’re natural predators so they have a lot of alluring traits - smooth voices, a wonderful scent, physically beautiful and very flattering. Some vampires have special abilities, too, like telepathy, visions, weather control or control over emotions, but not all. Esme and Rosalie are power-less, for example.
A human becomes a vampire when another vampire breaks their skin and inserts venom into their bloodstream. That vampire is called a sire and the human becomes a vampire, called a newborn. Newborns are usually blood thirsty most of the time and have a hard time controlling their thirst. Most vampires drink human blood, but there are some who become ‘vegetarian’ - living off of animal blood instead (ex. The Cullens). All vampires are aware of the Volturi - the boss clan of all vampires - and if they do feed off of humans, it must be something secretive, not drawing attention to themselves. It is discouraged for vampires to befriend humans and ‘illegal’ to tell humans what they are, unless they want the Volturi on their tales.
Werewolves are mortal enemies of vampires but the Cullens and Quileutes have a pact, stated below.
Werewolves, like vampires, started out human. But the difference is they didn’t have a choice in what they became. All werewolves are part of Native American tribes (Quileutes primarily, though some other tribes may have the same legends) and their wolf nature is part of them. They look completely human but there are obviously some differences. Before a werewolf phases (becomes a wolf) for the first time, their body temperature rises, running a 101 or 102. They also undergo a growth spurt and fill out, giving them the appearance of someone in their 20s. Usually an extreme period of emotion (normally anger) triggers the first phase and until the wolf is calm enough, they’re unable to return to human form.
Once a wolf phases, they can find out who is part of their pack. All wolves in a pack can hear each other’s thoughts while in wolf form. More than that, they can read each other’s minds, so they have no choice in what they reveal to their brother wolves. However, once back in human form, that connection is gone. Another note, when a werewolf phases, their clothes can’t make the transformation as well, so they return to human form naked.
The werewolves’ mortal enemy is the vampires. While vampires might smell wonderful to humans, they smell sickly sweet to werewolves. The only thing that can damage a vampire’s skin is werewolves’ teeth, and conversely, vampire’s venom is instant poison to a werewolf. However, the Quileutes have a pact with the Cullens that if they stay within the boundaries of their own land and don’t attack humans, they will allow the Cullens to live in Forks unharmed. But the presence of the vampires still indicates the need for werewolves, which is why the current pack is around.
Werewolves also have a process called imprinting. This is how a wolf finds its soul mate. There’s no rhyme or reason to who it is, and the wolf has no choice in the process. Once they see their imprint, they no longer have a life of their own - their life is centered around making their imprint happy. While the imprint has a choice whether or not to be with the wolf, it’s usually hard to resist the level or adoration and devotion that their wolf has for them. Werewolves cannot imprint on vampires (since technically they’re dead and their humanity has ceased) or wolves in their own pack. Anyone else is fair game - species, gender and age do not matter.
Humans are... well, humans. Fragile, squishy, breakable. They're completely oblivious to the 'supernatural', with the exception of Bella, but as stated above, if vampires tell humans, they're endanger of being investigated by the Volturi. Wolves tell their imprints, but for the most part, humans are kept in the dark.
